In a Nutshell
Ozawa Haruka requested for guidance from a fellow university mate, a ‘psychic’ called Saitou Yakumo as she believes that one of her friends is possessed by a spirit. Turns out, Yakumo, who was born with a red right eye, is not psychic, but he can clearly see and interact with ghosts. Using this ability and with the assistance of an eager Haruka, Yakumo helps police solve crimes that may be supernatural of nature.
Review
Story : The story is dealt with case-by-case, with the first case being Haruka’s possessed friend, who had gone on a daring quest in a haunted house. The cases are all psychical murder cases which are solved with the testimonies and clues left by the ghost victims. Besides that, there is a mysterious element in the form of Yakumo’s devious ‘father’, who seems to interfere or have a hand in causing the murders of his cases. I mean, the story is okay, the mysteries of the murder not super complicated or interesting, even with the “complicated” plot twists. I mean, the only thing that was interesting is Yakumo’s slight insecurity over his unnatural red eye.
Art : Art is pretty and cute, almost too pretty for a murder. Even the ghosts don’t look that scary because they’re shoujo-pretty. Yakumo is handsome, though.
Setting : Modern Japan university lalalala
Character : Yakumo is cool and very smart. Haruka is cute and prone to getting into risky situations, and unfortunately not that interesting.
Overall : Idk, i had fonder memories about this manga, but now that i re-read it again, i was bored. There’s also a second adaptation by Ritsu Miyako (2 volumes, shorter and only 3 cases) and both are based on light novels by Manabu Kaminaga. But meh. Maybe because there are other mangas that are smarter, more exciting, darker out there like Liar Game, Ghost Hunt, MPD Psycho etc. I’m just being honest. Shinrei Tantei Yakumo is not bad, but there’s better ones.
